Gemstone Buying Guide

Understanding gemstones is essential to making informed choices. Our guide will help you explore diamonds and coloured stones with clarity and confidence.

Colour

Diamond colour is assessed on a D-to-Z scale, from colourless to light yellow or brown. D to F grades are described as colourless, while G to J are near-colourless. Warmer tones become more noticeable in K to M grades. When choosing a diamond, we consider how its colour works with the setting and the overall design. Fancy-coloured diamonds follow a separate grading system.

Clarity

Clarity describes a diamond’s internal features, known as inclusions, and surface characteristics, known as blemishes. These are assessed under 10× magnification, although some may also be visible to the naked eye. Grades range from Flawless (FL) to Included (I1–I3). In selecting a stone, we look beyond its grade to consider the position and visibility of its characteristics and their effect on its appearance.

Carat

Carat measures a diamond’s weight rather than its visual size. Selection focuses on proportion and balance, ensuring the stone sits naturally within the design and maintains visual harmony.

Cut

A diamond’s proportions, symmetry and polish influence the way it interacts with light. Brightness, flashes of colour and the sparkle seen as the stone moves all contribute to its visual character. Together, these qualities play a major role in a diamond’s overall appearance.
